The Meaning of Life – the latest release – is primarily a meditation on the passing of years, where we’ve been, where we’re going. I still don’t know what the meaning of life’s mystery is, but I hope it has something to do with the subject of the last song on the CD, Santa Barbara Rising, about pulling together and helping each other.
This is an album of folk songs, Americana, a little blues – mostly concerned with the passage of time. How we (I) look back on life, trying to glean clues about meanig, events. And how to look ahead, with the understanding the end is now closer than the beginning. Some of the tracks are poignant, some funny, some perplexing. Lost love is, of course, part of it; but so are fond memories. And the last song, inspired by the disastrous fires, floods and mudslides of last year, leans on the hope of pulling together and helping one another to give life a richer substance.
