I wrote this one in 31 days in Spielberg’s office on the Warner Brothers lot. It was great fun to write, and I think the opening paragraph of this book is one of my favorite paragraphs ever. I wrote a whole new chapter in this one, something not in the script, about the character of Indy’s Asian helper, Short Round. The chapter is titled A Boy’s Life, which was a secret homage, because one of the early working titles of ET: The Extraterrestrial was A Boy’s Life. Lots of screaming in the movie, as I recall; not so much in the book.
